Shave of the Day 2015

Pre-shave: Cetaphil Cleansing Bar
Razor: Merkur 39C (Wed/Thu) & 34c (Fri)
Blade: Astra SP (3/4) & Voskhod (first time ever)
Soap: Reef Point Dragon's Blood (Wed) & Stirling Barbershop (Thu/Fri)
Brush: Semogue 1800
Post-shave: Thayers Toner & CK Eternity

Interesting few days. Changed back to the 34c this morning after getting a couple nicks on Wed/Thu w/a little irritation, and can certainly say that I'm learning truckloads from the slant. Still love the slant, and will be very keen in about 6 months to look at the RR Stealth Slant or Ikon #102. Not bad shaves on either Wed/Thu, and really liked the soaps performance.

The Stirling was very impressive in all areas. Slightly less cushion than the Reef Point, but I found it slightly slicker, scent was great and post shave was about the same (maybe slightly better). Would certainly have both in rotation if I liked the scent of the RP more.

I can understand the love for Voskhod now as well. It was just awesome in the 34c. They're smooth as, and though not quite as sharp as some, more then enough to get a DFS. They've scored highly on my spreadsheet :)

Excellent 2 pass shave tonight. The straight took care of 3 days growth with no pulling or tugging and only 2 small nicks. My DIY pseudo linen strop works an absolute treat.
On the weekend I purchased some ex barbers straights from @boldsworth at our bi weekly get together. Tonight I used an Invicta 6/8" that I partially restored from that purchase. The blade got :) hours of wet and dry and then full hone from 1K to C-nat to finish. I'm so pleased to add these blades to the ones I have. Thanks so much @boldsworth. In the past I've seen a few ex barber's blades and they often have some bizarre shapes and unusual wear from years of use, these ones don't seem too bad but I will spend time on a couple that will be projects and make some scales.
The Invicta eventually took a superb edge and while I prefer a 5/8" blade this one at 6/8" felt really good.

Be curious to hear what's behind this preference. Why do you prefer the smaller blade profile - is it simply a maneuverability thing?

Cold water shave - well as cold as the water gets up here at this time of the year
Preshave: bloom water
Soap: Shaver Heaven, Forbidden Forest
Brush: Simpson Berkerley Badger
Face lather
Razor: Inoue Fujisuke kamisori

Forbidden Forest lathered well again although nearly all scent has gone after 4 days in my bowl. I'll be on a new soap in the shave bowl tomorrow, so all good.

I was flying through the shave this morning, kami was my mate, then I lost concentration on one of the easiest, flatest part a of my cheek forgetting to stretch my skin (more like too lazy) and I gave myself a nice 1cm nick. This was on my second pass, spat the dummy and only did 2 passes. Smooth shave though but with dunny paper now on my face I look likeNorman Gunton.

Post-shave: Alum, Thayers, Emulsion

Saturday is usually my shaving sabbath. But I made an exception to shave with Speick to see how it compares to the La Toja (see here) - and determine which I think is the better shaving stick for travel for me.

First shave with this eBay low ball win. Surprised me with its performance. It took a nice smooth edge and shaved the exact same. There is something very, very satisfying about shaving with a blade you honed yourself - see here for more info on the hone.

My wife suddenly surprised me with a gift of the Terre D'Hermès last night. Very unusual!!! So it called for a Saturday shave that pairs with it. Been looking forward to cracking open the JdO. Well worth it! [emoji4]
The #15 is my favourite Gillette razor.

There's a bottle of Terre D'Hermès sitting under my Christmas Tree. Can't wait to open the cap on that one. CRSW Jardin De'Orange and a few sprays of Terre come Christmas day.

I had read many things about the Lavanille and whilst it was at a price premium to the Seville, decided to give it a burl. All I can say is that I wasn't disappointed. Like a woodsy/oriental cologne with vanilla and chocolate under notes. Couldn't bring myself to use a stronger scented post shave as I didn't want to mask the scent.

There's something to be said for shaving on the weekend. Normally I don't and leave my face a couple of days to recoup before the coming week, but have I been missing out. All the time in the world... relaxed... and can appreciate things. This may get mundane again after some time, but it's still the honeymoon period for me. Certainly confirming that the Voskhod in the 34c is maybe my favourite blade thus far (thanks to @Lifes a Peach).

On the contrary - soon you will be making more time during the week for your shaves, because you want every shave to be like this ;)
 
I said I wasn't going to semi restore another razor but ...... you know what but means. 3 hours of wet and dry and a full hone from bevel to bliss for a recent arrival from Japan. I bid on two razors a Sonnal 5/8" and a Puma 5/8" straight point. I hoped I would get one but .......... I now have an extra I wasn't expecting. Both razors arrived in really good condition. The Sonnal is a bit better than the Puma but the Puma sure is pretty. (y)

2 pass with the Puma, possibly a bit of burn but no blood leakage. A good DFS.

Cngrats. I love my Puma 89, even though it's a little bent....I will get another (and another) as the steel is so nice to work with.
