Hi guys!

I’ve recently switched from croap (Proraso and TOBS) and face lathering, to hard soaps and bowl lathering.

Now I’m after the perfect lather bowl. I do want something ceramic, but not ridiculously expensive. I also don’t mind scuttle-type designs. I’ve been looking at:

Whispers From The Woods

Fine Accoutrements

Does anyone have any better ideas?

Thanks!

Get one made for you. Just have a look around, find a potter whose work you like. That way, you'll have something utterly unique and you'll be promoting a local artisan, and it most likely won't cost much.

Since you're in VIC, I'd suggest Gooseneck Pottery near Korumburra. Unless Robert has something you like on hand, you'll probably have to wait a while, as he only fires his kiln twice a year. If you drive out there and have a look, you'll see why. As a former blacksmith, I always take an interest in getting things hot, and that kiln is just awesome, in the original sense of the word.

Has anyone used the Fine lather bowl? Is it worth $50?
I own the Fine Lather bowl and its a very good lathering bowl although on the shallow side. The grooves do a wonderful job whipping lather so its great if you don't mind lather spilling over the sides? Also fits nicely in the palm so a great addition to the shaving den.

I'll admit I don't use my ceramic/porcelain bowls/scuttle much these days out of fear of the misses knocking it off the bathroom sink so invested in a few travel/plastic bowls such as the Rover Dog bowl, PAA travel scuttle and the Pereira Shaving Unbreakable bowl which gets the most use as indestructible, large and light but deep enough to allow for plenty of lather.

On the pricey side when I originally bought it off the kickstarter page but has served me well and no fear of it breaking if dropped or left in luggage.

+1 @Razor Burn
My next bowl will be the Pereira, I have the Fine and Rover travel bowl, both excellent.
The Rover bowl is so good that I added some malleable glue 'bumps' to the Fine to simulate it.
Using the same stuff, you could convert any bowl to a shaving bowl. It's called Sugru, but Bunnings sell a similar product :

Also check out Captain's Choice if you're looking for something ready-made. Their "classic" bowl isn't available in as many finishes as it used to be, but they've added other styles and scuttles to their product line.
I always wanted a Captain's Choice Copper bowl but too expensive and a somewhat unobtanium item these days so settled for the cheaper options.

Find face lathering enjoyable as of late but there's something about using a bowl that gives me better lather as easier to whip up creamy lather with little fuss. :)

The standard copper bowl is sold out, but there are three others. $US48.95/58.95 isn't really that much for a hand-beaten bowl. Their service is exemplary.

I don't use my bowls as much any more, but I do find artisan soaps and croaps benefit from its use, while I usually face lather my milled soaps.

Is the Pereira any different to the Chinese knockoffs on eBay?

I haven't seen the Chinese versions of the Pereira in particular, but other knockoffs I've seen have all been made of much lower-firing clays (less energy to produce), so are a lot less robust and dense than the genuine articles. If price is that important, the knockoff may be a good option IF it arrives intact.

That is exactly what I was thinking of.

Incidentally, my real (stoneware) Captain's Choice bowl arrived in a strong box of its own, packed inside another strong carton, packed with lots of straw. You could have probably run over it with a forklift without damaging the contents.

Sigh.;)

Isn't it a bit early to start plugging the Auction? A bit like Woolworths promoting Easter in January. Maybe the Japanese have that right...
