Post Shave: Nivea Balm and Pinaud Clubman AS
Three pass shave. First time in a long time I nicked myself on the chin. Only blemish on an otherwise excellent shave. The scent of the soap is quite luxurious and it performs adequately.

I still can't believe what a difference distilled water makes to the lather - fantastic shave and almost forgot how great PolSilver are (y)

Even after all these months it's amazing to see I'm still learning the same razor. Found that I had been taking the wrong angle when going ATG which meant I wasn't really cutting as efficiently. It always 'sounded' right but always left me feeling like it was an underwhelming pass.

Happy to say that's no longer the case :)
 
Didn't have time tonight for a straight razor shave so took out the Gem Jewel for a run with a brand new Gem blade. 1 pass I kid you not, no pressure and so close to BBS in most places and DFS along the jawline. A couple of small nicks, expected with such a razor with the blade gap it has. Nothing, apart from 2 blood spots to indicate I had been affectionately nibbled. A very good shave with no issues to report. My own soap lathered in a scuttle.

So shaverhut had the 26c at pretty much half price, and I didn't own an open comb which meant a purchase was a no-brainer. First shave yesterday was surprisingly good and was curious to see if a repeat was on the cards. Well, happy to report that it was. Both mornings have been 2 pass, WTG/XTG with minimal touchups and DFS nearing BBS. Very efficient razor yet incredibly mild, and contrary to some reports I have read, I found the angle was intuitive. Good audible feedback, and the quality is top notch, especially considering the price.

Two shave pass being careful not to reopen the nick on my chin. Successfully did that and a DFS it was. Really enjoy the menthol hit of the Floid and the scent. Sorry the picture is a little out of focus.

Vive la Difference!

I was trying to choose my hardware and Software lineup for this morning's shave when it occurred to me just how fortunate I am having to make this decision each time I shave.

It isn't a matter of grabbing the shaving brush and the the soap, then using the razor to scrape it all off again. While I know that there's a small cabal at P&C who see great virtue in having only one of each item, it's definitely not my style. Imagine restricting yourself to only one genre of literature or movies, eating only one very particular kind of food from one particular country, only ever driving one brand and model of car, going to the same beach for every holiday and always staying in the same house.... What a sad and self limiting way of spending your life. It denies the extraordinary richness and diversity that life offers, and limits ones learning and personal growth.

The hobby we all share and love is a classic case in point : we have an almost limitless variety of options on offer, in every area of the activity. Most Paste'n'Cutters avail themselves of the dazzling range of shaving soaps available, and many have a selection of after shave products to suit different weather, different moods or different situations (boardroom vs bedroom)

One area in which most of us don't take advantage of the variety available is that of hardware - razors in particular. In terms of families of options we have Double Edged, Single Edge, Cartridge, Kamisori, Straight-Edge and undoubtedly others that have slipped my mind. While the vast majority of us have a number of razors from the same family (a DE collection or a straight collection), only a few of us have collections that span different families of razor design and fewer still use a range of razors as part of their shaving regimen.

The thing is, they all work - they do their fundamental job of removing whiskers. Some concepts have truly stood the test of time, while others have not been quite so successful in the long term. What makes them worth exploring is that they all offer a different shave experience - some are more comfortable than others, some more difficult to learn to use than others, some are more or less effective than others, some give wonderful feedback to the user while others give practically none. But they all offer the opportunity to experience something different, and to learn a new skill which in my experience enhances existing skills significantly.

So what's holding you back? Grab something new (to you) and different and set sail on a journey of discovery. You'll broaden your shaving horizons, improve your skills and have an interesting time. For what it's worth, I get enormous satisfaction from being able to choose from DEs, Straights or Kamisoris. They all give me a fantastic shave and all offer a unique shaving experience. Vive la Difference!!

Footnote : Today's shave was great. The Brucke German straight is beautifully "soft" and comfortable to use...
