So we've heard or Monsta's blade count, what's your razor count?

Mark1966, here's a thread for you :amazed:

Well I suppose I'd better respond then :D

The stash now runs to a few:
Double Rings
Single Rings (inc gold plated smooth barrel British one)
Pocket Editions (Empire, leather, soft leather etc)
Milady of different eras
Flare Bottom Aristocrat
New Improved Aristocrat (recent addition!)
Combination and Traveller sets
Bulldog
Big Fellows
Tuckaways

New Improved Bostonians
New Standard
Various NEWs
#77

Goodwills
various Techs
1934 US Aristocrat
1940s US Aristocrat

#15
#20
#47
SuperSpeeds
Rockets (most)
#21
#16
Aristocrat Jnr
#22
US Rhodium Executive
#66 (normal, gold plated DeLuxe, aluminium Coronation)
#58

President
Diplomat
Lady Gillette (blue, pink, champagne)
Fatboy (normal, red dot and gold plated Executive)
Slim (and gold plated Aristocrat)
Toggles (gold, chrome, s/n 1-5)
Super Adjustables

What do I use?
I've tried lots of them, although still not all. I tend to stick to:
  • British Aristocrats,
  • President,
  • Fatboy,
  • Slim,
  • Rockets
  • Aristocrat Junior

My favourites are the hefty British Aristocrats while a leaning towards the solid guard. Must think about what I will use tomorrow now.

What blades do I use?
Astra SPs tend to be my benchmark blade and the one I come back to. Sharks are great too as a cheapie. Personnas and Crystals were a real let down for me.

I find that the razor/blade combo makes a big difference. I had an Eclipse Red Ring that I sold (and possible regret doing so but SOMETHING had to go) that was really not working for me. Irritation and razor burn galore. I slipped in a Feather and it was wonderful! I often find that the Feather works really well in an aggressive razor.

What razors don't I use and why?
Old Types - I don't really like using them. But now you mention it, it has been a while. Maybe I need to go back and try again.

Gold Plated collectible razors - these tend to be a use once and put away. The plating is just too thin.

Double Rings and other unique pieces - once again used and put away. I don't want to risk damaging them. Most I've used a couple of times but certainly not regularly. I've not tried the serial numbered 1-5 Gold Toggle yet - not sure if I will.

Is that the sort of post you wanted? :embarrest:

Happy to help :cheesy:

Of course the real question is how many variants of each I need?

Do I need both the patent numbered and pat pending versions of some of the 'crats? Do I need to have both of the case variations? These are the things that trouble me as I ponder some upcoming bills!

Sorry folks - didn't mean to shut down the discussion!

Ha I think I'm still trying to fathom one person owning all of those razors.

Umm, you should have seen the list BEFORE I started trimming the stash down :eek:mg:

I've sold/PIFed about 60 to date. I have 11 in transit to me and my ebay watch list has only 62 items in it at present so I'm cutting back.

I realised that I couldn't compete with some of the Yanks so am scaling back and seeking to focus more :D

I've attached for interest some old pics of MOST of the stash. Some of these have gone, some have been 'upgraded', some are still around.

Fantastic collection there.

What time period did you acquire that over?

Started DE shaving in March 2010. Got my first vintage razor (L 1 birth year SuperSpeed) a little later that month.

The rest, as they say, is history....

I should warn people though - do not try this at home! I got so silly last year that I was buying duplicates because I'd forgotten what I had or had on the way. I'd see an auction on something at the last minute and bid without realising I'd got one previously - thus the culling. It was a factor of having them all in boxes rather than out where I could see them.

We could be moving office in a few months - that will cause a challenge

That's pretty hard core in just over a year.

I have a Purchasing Officer (bless her) who prevents me from late night sojourns on the Bay and various interweb stores, otherwise I would have probably three times what I have already.

She suggests I collect blades as "they don't take up much room".

The battle for Middle Earth was easier than this one...

That's pretty impressive Mark1996. Particularly for somebody living in Australia. Just makes it harder and a lot more expensive. Pity you don't collect SEs and are culling a few!

impressive or obsessive complusive? Hmmm the jury may be out on that, definitely more difficult and expensive than living in the States - no amazing scores like you read of in another forum at yard sales or antique stores on the way home. I think that there are a few around with larger collections here in OZ - some are truly amazing!

Culling SEs? You mean like these:

or this:

or this:

Some spares that same with other stuff that is surplus to requirements :D

What is the deal with SEs around here though!

They're just better.
Shame the blades are harder to get and more expensive though.

Nice to see you've dipped your toes into SE with some easier to get more common/cheaper ones though.
SE goes a long way back, it was the type of razor everyone used before the 1904 gillette DE if they weren't using a straight. So there's plenty of old SEs to try and find and buy.
My oldest is a patented 1900 model, probably made at around 1910.
I think it's not only personal preference to SE, but the price that SE razors go for, I paid $30 for that razor, and maybe $20 for a 1912 patented , 1912 manufactured 'damaskeene' 1912.
Shame about the blade price and availability, because they do shave the best.

I know what you mean about expense and difficulty getting razors when living in Australia, Three years ago when I was buying up like mad, I missed so many cheap pristine razors because they wouldn't ship outside of USA. I paid twice as much for an "also ran" and $20 postage to get what I could, while awesome razors went for $5 to USA buyers because the seller didn't want to ship overseas.

That's the problem with a small site. You get a few talking about SEs and that's all that happens. Any other SEs you're thinking of culling? I've got half a drawer full of odds and ends I'd like to sell too. Might be pushing it here given the size of the target audience. Aside from that there's still no B/S/T forum up and running.

Well at is about all of my SEs save one that might wife likes the look of. I've got a couple of blades and will try it sometime.

Yeah I have a few low value odds and sods I've like to find a home for too. The trouble is it takes a LOT of those sort of sales to come even CLOSE to paying for a DE purchase!
