Hi All
I have picked up a Super Speed and a Fat Boy that are both in excellent mechanical condition and very good cosmetically but I'm thinking may be worth getting them re-plated.
Question is is there anyone in Australia going this or would I have to consider going to the likes of Back Roads Gold or Razor Emporium.

There isn't anybody in Australia who is specialising in relating a Super Speed and the Fatboy, however there is a person in New Zealand can replate a Super Speed and the Gillette Fatboy, if, I'm not mistaken? I've forgotten the name of the business in NZ.

Razor Emporium is the only business who are fully specialising in relating the Gillette Fatboy and replacing any small mechanical parts inside the Fatboy, as far as I'm aware Back Roads Gold isn't specialising replacing any small mechanical parts inside the Fatboy. You're better off sending both razor directly to Razor Emporium.

Chris Spencer at Back Roads Gold has replacement parts to repair a Fatboy. He replaced a bent centre bar in one of mine. His work is impeccable.

I've got replated razors from Chris Spencer at Back Roads Gold and his work is impeccable however for convenience, Auckland Razor Company is definitely worth it especially if the razor is already in working condition.

I'm sure that Auckland Razor does quality work, but there seems to be a huge price difference. I consider myself a savvy shopper, so I always comparison shop.

Here is what I paid to Back Roads Gold in July to have my Fatboy replated in 24k gold.

Shipping to USA...................$AUD 19.95
Invoice from Back Roads Gold (including return shipping) $AUD 147.73

TOTAL......$AUD 167.68

I just checked the Auckland Razor Co website and they get $NZ 280 ($AUD 258) to replate a Fatboy in 24k gold. Add to that shipping to NZ ($AUD 15.35) and a flat rate of $AUD 18.45 for return shipping comes to $AUD 291.80.

For me, that's a no brainer.

I agree, that's a significant difference, particularly when getting the razors back isn't a priority, a great well priced job is.

Potentially due to the volume of razors they do (increased cost of materials if not buying in bulk)?

100% agree, 7 replated razors by Chris (3 Fats and 2 Slims for me and 2 Fats for my son) and as said impeccable workmanship and service. Turn around has been less than a month on all razors. I have had 2 done by Dave in NZ, no question of his quality, service etc but Chris at BRG works out cheaper!!

I got a nice rhodium plated Fatboy from Above The Tie some years back and also a nice rhodium Slim adjustable... sad but I heard they are closing. I didn't send it in to be restored but obviously they restored it given rhodium is not original for those razors... I do have NOS Slim Adjustable in a sealed packet... A bit of waste but it'd be sad at this point to ruin its collectability by using it.
